Open Windows Explorer on this PC

There appears to be a bug with the Chrome icon in Windows 10. Here’s how to fix the huge Chrome icon that appears from time to time.

Update (Nov 2016): This appears to be a temporary solution only. Chrome updates seem to have the bug reappear.

  • Right click the Chrome tile on the Windows 10 Start menu and choose “More” > “Open file location”
  • Right click the Chrome shortcut and choose “Open file location”
  • Right click the file “chrome.VisualElementsManifest.xml” and choose “Rename”
  • Add “.old” to the filename (i.e. “chrome.VisualElementsManifist.xml.old”)
  • Close all the open Explorer windows and repeat the first step: Right click the Chrome tile on the Windows 10 Start menu and choose “More” > “Open file location”
  • Right click the Chrome shortcut and choose “Cut”
  • Minimise the window and “Paste” the shortcut on your Desktop
  • Right click the new Chrome shortcut on your Desktop and choose “Cut”
  • Maximise the window again and “Paste” the shortcut back to the folder where you copied it from

Completely disable quick access

Many users don’t like how Quick Access behaves in Windows 10. Here’s how to completely disable it.

Disclaimer: This procedure requires editing the registry. Recommended for expert users only. Proceed at own risk.

  • First, set Windows Explorer to open on This PC.
  • Press Windows-R, type regedit and click OK.
  • Navigate to and expand KEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}.
  • Right click “ShellFolder” and click Permissions.
  • Click Add > Advanced > Find Now and select your user account in the list. Click OK.
  • Check the box next to “Full Control” and click OK.
  • Double click the “Attributes” value and change a0100000 to a0600000 and click OK.
  • Restart your PC.

Sub folders inside public_html – 0755

On-screen keyboard pops up

The on-screen keyboard seems to be misbehaving on a growing number of Windows 10 desktop PCs. It appears to be due to a inconsistency between its “new” and traditional Control Panel settings. The on-screen keyboard is switched off in Windows 10’s “new” settings, but enabled in the Control Panel at the same time. To resolve the issue:

 

  • Right click the Start menu
  • Click Control Panel
  • Change the view to “Small icons” (top right)
  • Click Ease of Access Centre
  • Click Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard
  • Un-check Use On-Screen Keyboard
  • Click OK
